The recent intra-party squabble in Ohio, between the state’s two Republican senators, garnered national attention. cartoonist Stewart, in the nearby Detroit Free Press, managed a depiction that captured the awkward submission of Senator Marcus Alonzo Hanna.

Ohio was, like Virginia, a “mother of presidents” as well as a host of presidential aspirants. Hanna had such ambitions and so, perennially if not quadrennially, did Senator Joseph Benson Foraker. Both men were not enamored of President Roosevelt’s reform policies, yet Foraker manufactured a way to show party loyalty and sabotage Hanna’s ambitions.

He arranged for a state party confab to endorse the president’s re-election. Hanna’s vote would vitiate his nascent campaign, or show him a traitor to the White House. He tried pleading for the president’s understanding if he were to abstain, in a cable sent to Roosevelt, speaking in the Pacific Northwest.

Roosevelt simply, and masterfully, replied, “I have not asked any man for his support. I have had nothing whatever to do with raising the issue as to my indorsement. Sooner or later it was bound to rise; and inasmuch as it has now arisen, of course those who favor my administration and my nomination will indorse them, and those who do not will oppose.”

It was “game, set, and match,” and cartoonist Donald Farquharson Stewart drew an anguished Hanna presenting his endorsement on a silver platter to the beaming president.
