Comments and Context
The Christmas numbers of Puck through the decades were always sumptuous affairs, at least sixty-four pages instead of the magazine’s usual sixteen; invariably full-color throughout instead of color front-, back-, and center-pages; often with contributions by guest “celebrity” writers and poets; and virtually no politics.
If politics intruded, it usually was in humorous good will, innocuous depictions of prominent figures, not attacks or issues.
These numbers were always priced higher than the weekly magazines — for years at twenty-five cents, the rough equivalent of five dollars today.
This cover marks one of the earliest contributions of Gordon Grant, who became one of Puck‘s “answers” to Charles Dana Gibson of Life Magazine, who enjoyed phenomenal success with glamorous “Gibson Girls.” Grant seldom addressed politics, specializing in social cartoons, and decorative art. In later year Grant devoted his work to book illustration and paintings, notably maritime subjects and tall ships.
