Comments and Context
“Wreckreation,” the second major contribution to Puck by the forgotten master Harry Grant Dart, is not a political cartoon but social commentary verging on grim humor.
His centerspread theme-and-variations addresses the dubious pleasures, if not the dangers, of popular sports and pastimes of the day.
Dart’s drawing style was similar to that of Albert Levering; and both cartoonists drew more often for Puck‘s rival, Life, at the time. It is possible they were enticed to Puck‘s pages during the absences of young J. S. Pughe, who often was ill during 1908 and unable to work. Otherwise J. S. Pughe and S. Ehrhart addressed these types of subjects in the magazine’s centerspreads.
