Comments and Context
With the dust settled from President Roosevelt’s active administration after William McKinley’s assassination, Democratic Party wrangling between factions favoring and opposing William Jennings Bryan — by mid-summer 1904, the rival presidential candidates were chosen, and the campaign could begin.
Cartoonist Pughe betrays the magazine’s ambivalence about the race. The Democratic weekly traditionally favored the general policies (despite the disruptions caused by Bryan’s platforms), yet found much to admire in Roosevelt.
The magazine had boosted the conservative Judge Parker, yet his obscure status as a political figure can be deduced by Pughe’s caricature. Most national figures, even of mid-level celebrity, were known sufficiently to Puck‘s cartoonists so that they could be depicted realistically in any plausible pose and attitude. But the vacant stare and portrait-like visage in this cartoon suggest that Pughe was dependent on photographs of the newcomer on the political scene.
