Theodore Roosevelt tells Charles R. Brown that he remembers both him and his wife well and recalls an event from Brown’s service during the Civil War where he was injured. Roosevelt mentions the passing of Wilmot S. Dow and recalls a story from his own stay at a lumber camp and encounter with a lumberjack.

Comments and Context

Starting in 1878 Theodore Roosevelt made trips up to Island Falls, Maine for the purpose of improving his health. There he became acquainted with William “Bill” Wingate Sewall and his nephew Wilmot S. Dow and the logging camp that they had which left a lasting impression on Roosevelt who kept in touch with Sewall throughout his life.
