President Roosevelt realized after reading the pamphlet that Daniel Bartlett Sargent fought on the Kearsarge in the Civil War. He notes that his uncle, James Dunwody Bulloch, fought on the Alabama, and that his former naval aide, Cameron McRae Winslow, is a nephew of John Ancrum Winslow, who commanded the Kearsarge.
