Letter from John M. Taylor to Theodore Roosevelt

John M. Taylor sends President Roosevelt a copy of a letter which Captain Allyn Capron sent to Judge John Robert Thomas, from Cuba in 1898. Taylor describes his part in having helped to recruit two companies of Rough Riders from Indian Territory, and reminds Roosevelt that he came to San Antonio, where he was introduced to Roosevelt by Thomas.

John M. Taylor, District Captain of the Republican Executive Committee for the Indian Territory, encloses his correspondences with President Roosevelt to demonstrate Roosevelt’s friendship towards the Cherokee Nation and Hon. David Muskrat. Taylor also informs Muskrat that a convention will be held to elect six Cherokee delegates to the Republican National Convention and sends instructions for the formation of Republican clubs in the districts.

John M. Taylor informs President Roosevelt that members of the Cherokee Nation in the Indian Territory who are part of “The National Party” will become members of the National Republican convention upon the extinguishment of tribal government. He also argues for support from the Republicans for the Cherokee Nation as they have been loyal to the United States government and the Republican party. He encloses copies of instructions sent to the political clubs of the Cherokee Nation.
