Letter from Ernest Thompson Seton to Theodore Roosevelt

Ernest Thompson Seton states that he made a mistake asking President Roosevelt to revise a chapter from The Birch-Bark Roll of the Woodcraft Indians rather than approving the whole book. Seton was nervous about asking too much of Roosevelt. He hopes that Roosevelt will eventually feel that he can give his support to the entire book and notes that many independent camps and sportsmen’s clubs have accepted the book as a standard for those who enjoy the outdoors.

Letter from Ernest Thompson Seton to Theodore Roosevelt

Ernest Thompson Seton was glad to receive the latest news from Theodore Roosevelt’s hunt in Africa. Seton’s book on North American mammals came out earlier in November and has received good reviews. A copy is waiting for Roosevelt in New York. He offers a discussion about the relationship between monogamy and sanitation practices among mammals. He believes that monogamy is more beneficial and asks if Roosevelt can pay attention to any evidence of polygamous ruminants with sanitary practices. He also points out that lions are believed to be monogamous and asks Roosevelt to keep signs of monogamy in mind while collecting information about them.

Letter from Ernest Thompson Seton to Theodore Roosevelt

Ernest Thompson Seton relays details on his recent meeting with C. Hart Merriam discussing Merriam’s “magnum opus” on North American mammals. Merriam, being a civil servant, cannot take more than six months’ leave to work on his research. If Secretary of Agriculture James Wilson were to request a list of mammals in North America beneficial to agriculture and commerce, this would cut Merriam’s work by at least one-third.

Ernest Thompson Seton thanks President Roosevelt for his kind letter, which he read aloud to his campers. He says that the campers will show Roosevelt a “sturgeon-match that will excel the wildest foot ball game.” Seton also enclosed a chapter of The Birch Bark Roll previously kept from publication which he thinks may interest Roosevelt.
