Betts, Charles H. (Charles Henry), 1863-1929
Charles H. Betts would like Theodore Roosevelt to write a short piece for a special edition of The Lyons Republican that will be published to celebrate the paper’s 90th anniversary. He requests a piece about “American ideals,” but stresses that Roosevelt can write about whatever he chooses. In a postscript, he asks permission to print what Roosevelt told him in a letter regarding his views “relative to the ‘Court’s Decision.'”

Charles H. Betts responds to Theodore Roosevelt’s recent articles in The Outlook, agreeing with his piece entitled “Murder is Murder” while heartily disagreeing with article from May 13th attacking the decision of the Court of Appeals. He remarks that, “if the time ever comes when the courts of this country interpret the laws in harmony with ignorant public sentiment, fanned into flame by uninformed and ignorant yellow journals, it will be a sad day for this Republic,” as anarchy and unnecessary revolution would overtake the United States.

Charles H. Betts proposes how to choose a candidate at the convention if he and Theodore Roosevelt cannot agree beforehand. The only ticket that all Republicans can agree on and is likely to be elected is the one he presented six months prior with Roosevelt for governor and James W. Wadsworth for Lieutenant Governor. Betts cautions that political conditions differ in New York City and the state of New York.

Charles H. Betts urges President Roosevelt not to allow Governor Benjamin B. Odell to have the chairmanship of the State Republican Committee. Instead, Betts believes the chair should go to Colonel George W. Dunn. Betts warns that Republicans are on the side of Dunn and of Senator Thomas Collier Platt.
