The American Museum of Natural History in New York City recently granted a number of awards from its T. R. Memorial Fund for 1975. Thirty-three grants were awarded, with the largest grants being given to four researchers highlighted in the article. Theodore Roosevelt had a life-long interest in natural history and the Theodore Roosevelt Association has worked to continue this through its support of the research grant program.

Director Thomas D. Nicholson of the American Museum of Natural History provides a history of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund which was established in 1960 to provide grants to individuals to support research projects that reflect the museum’s focus on the conservation of North American wildlife. He notes the considerable financial support that members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association have provided during the first fifteen years of the fund’s existence.

Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) John A. Gable says that the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal will now act as the “official periodical” of the TRA. Gable thanks members of the Association for their response to a recent fund raising drive, but he notes that the TRA needs more members and income to continue its work.

This issue features two articles on the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund administered by the American Museum of Natural History in New York City which provides research grants to those studying North American wildlife. It has an analysis of Theodore Roosevelt’s 1906 speech “The Man With the Muckrake,” along with the first appearance in the Journal by famed Roosevelt biographer Edmund Morris who reviews the 1975 film The Wind and the Lion.

Hamilton Fish recounts a confrontation between former President Theodore Roosevelt and labor leader Samuel Gompers at a July 6, 1917 reception for a delegation from the new Russian government of Aleksandr Kerensky. Fish personally witnessed the confrontation, and claims that it resulted from Gompers’s denunciation of African American strikebreakers in East St. Louis, Illinois. Roosevelt criticized Gompers for his message and the “meeting became a riot,” and Roosevelt had to be escorted to safety.

The Theodore Roosevelt Association voted in May 1974 to establish the Theodore Roosevelt Association Library Program, with the aim of donating “books and other scholarly materials” to public and academic libraries to promote the study of Theodore Roosevelt.

A new branch of the Roosevelt Savings Bank recently opened in Massapequa Park, New York on September 21, 1974, accompanied by a variety of festivities. The article highlights the appearance of Roosevelt impersonator Joseph Early and the Roosevelt artifacts and pictures displayed in the bank.

Two trustees of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin and Walter Lippmann, recently died. The obituary notes that McKeldin was named after Roosevelt and that he was both Mayor of Baltimore and Governor of Maryland. It discusses Lippmann’s journalism career and his admiration for Roosevelt.

Sheldon Liebman of Bayside High School won the annual Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest with his speech on “Theodore Roosevelt and Unemployment.” The article additionally acknowledges the other finalists in the contest, as well as the organizers of the competition, and the role played by the Theodore Roosevelt Association.

Sheldon Liebman, winner of the 1975 Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest, looks at how Theodore Roosevelt addressed the issue of unemployment in a 1915 speech. He argues that some of the approaches taken to tackle this problem, such as unemployment offices, were first proposed by Roosevelt. Liebman quotes Roosevelt’s 1915 speech in his own address.

John A. Gable asserts that Theodore Roosevelt must be understood not just as a man of action, but as an accomplished thinker, intellectual, and writer. He cites as proof the many publications Roosevelt produced, from letters to works of history and natural science. Gable stresses Roosevelt’s work in the field of history and believes that his knowledge of history contributed to his success as President. He notes the literary organizations that Roosevelt belonged to and his friendship with many of the leading intellectuals of his time.

G. Wallace Chessman looks at the evolving historiography of the study of Theodore Roosevelt and places his own work on Roosevelt’s time as Governor of New York within that framework. He asserts that Roosevelt’s reputation suffered in the 1930s with the publication of Henry Pringle’s biography (Theodore Roosevelt: A Biography), but the work of historians such as George Mowry and John Blum served as a correction to Pringle’s work. Chessman argues that the 1930s, with its isolationism in foreign affairs and its hostility to big business, further undermined Roosevelt’s standing.
Chessman argues that as Governor of New York, Roosevelt mostly took stands that should be viewed as “progressive,” and that he successfully navigated a course between obedience to the New York political machine led by Thomas Platt and his own reform agenda. He says that Roosevelt’s time as governor prepared him for the presidency, and he concludes his essay by contending that Roosevelt, however much he loved the American West, should primarily be seen as a man of New York City: “T.R. was surely an urban man.”

James Roosevelt, President of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), provides a detailed look at the activities of the TRA during 1974, noting the significant financial donations the TRA made to various entities such as the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, the Youngs Memorial Cemetery in Oyster Bay, New York where Theodore Roosevelt is buried, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. He highlights the hiring of John A. Gable to serve as the Executive Director of the TRA. Several of the initiatives noted here are described in some detail in brief notices in the rest of the issue. This piece also includes a listing of the leadership of the TRA.

The fifty-fifth annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) was held on October 27, 1974, at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. In its description of the proceedings, this article notes some of the guests and highlights reports given by John A. Gable and P. James Roosevelt of the TRA as well as the work of the Nominating Committee. Additionally of note was a slide show presented on Bulloch Hall, the childhood home of Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt’s mother.

This inaugural issue of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal highlights the efforts of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) to foster the study and appreciation of Theodore Roosevelt through its many outreach programs such as its public speaking contest, gifts of Roosevelt related books and materials to public and academic libraries, and support of institutions with historical ties to Roosevelt like the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. This issue also makes clear how closely tied the TRA was at the time to the greater New York City metropolitan area.
