Porter began his cartooning career on the Boston Traveler around 1910, and later drew for the Chicago Herald, where this cartoon appeared. The paper eventually merged with the Record and later the American and Examiner, papers in the Hearst chain. The idea for the cartoon was supplied by J.P. McEvoy, who was a popular humorist and poet; Broadway and Hollywood playwright; collaborator with W. C. Fields; and comic-strip scriptwriter.
