Two articles from The Coconino Sun report on events near Flagstaff, Arizona. The first details a strong turnout in honor of Theodore Roosevelt as he traveled through the area on his way to the Grand Canyon. He met several former Rough Riders during his brief stop. The second discusses a suggested road from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon, promoted by the local Automobile Club.

The New York Sun reports President Roosevelt’s words urging his listeners in Arizona to preserve the Grand Canyon as it is and not obstruct or mar it with any sorts of construction.

Scott Miller describes the history and significance of the Supreme Court’s decision in Cameron v. United States that the president has the authority under the Antiquities Act of 1906 to protect federal lands through the creation of national monuments. The titular Ralph H. Cameron was a prospector and promoter who objected to limits being imposed on his business interests by President Theodore Roosevelt’s action declaring the Grand Canyon–as well as other sites–National Monuments. The Supreme Court dismissed his objections, establishing the act as a cornerstone of conservation efforts and allowing future presidents to also protect lands from commercial use.

At a recent dedication of a promontory on the rim of the Grand Canyon to Theodore Roosevelt, Secretary of the Interior Bruce E. Babbitt spoke on the impact Roosevelt had in preserving the Grant Canyon, designating it a Game Preserve in 1906, and a National Monument in 1908.
