Description:

Transcript copy of a letter acknowledging receipt of a Congressional Pamphlet laws, and inquiring about members of his former Cabinet, particularly Secretary of War Joseph Holt and Attorneys General Jeremiah Black and Edwin M. Stanton. Buchanan expresses confidence that his administration can stand any test, despite a supposition that there may be an investigation regarding Fort Sumter.

Contraband Quarters, Mason's Island

Description:

Map and architectural drawing of the contraband quarters established on Mason's Island, later called Theodore Roosevelt Island. These quarters were instituted during the Civil War as a safe haven for freedmen and fugitive slaves who came within Union lines. Drawing depicts the layout of living quarters, as well as the location of hospital facilities, stables, laundry, school house, and teacher and employee quarters. A section and elevation of the contraband quarters is at the top of the drawing.

This article describes the success and hardships of the Allotment System, a program designed to deduct money from soldiers' pay and have it sent home to their families during the Civil War. Theodore Roosevelt, W. E. Dodge, and Theodore Bailey Johnson had been appointed commissioners by the President to visit regiments of volunteer soldiers in New York State.
