On his lap is the terrier "Skip," who, according to The Hunting and Exploring Adventures of Theodore Roosevelt, "adopted the President as his special master . . . [Roosevelt] grew so attached to him that at the end of the [bear] hunt he sent him back to the White House as a playmate for his children."
