Roosevelt's Contemporaries: Emilio Aguinaldo

Emilio Aguinaldo, a member of a Filipino revolutionary society called Katipunan, declared the independence of the Philippines on June 12, 1898. Although he was captured by Americans and swore an oath of allegiance to the United States, after which he was eventually pardoned, Aguinaldo continued to advocate for Filipino independence throughout his life.

Roosevelt's Contemporaries: Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon

Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon, co-commander of Theodore Roosevelt's trek down the River of Doubt, had worked in the wilds of Brazil for twenty-five years before the 1913-1914 expedition. His experience in the Amazonian wilderness and the fact that he had initially discovered and named the River of Doubt made him perfect for his position in the Roosevelt-Rondon Expedition.
