A general view of the allotment system

Description:

This article describes the success and hardships of the Allotment System, a program designed to deduct money from soldiers' pay and have it sent home to their families during the Civil War. Theodore Roosevelt, W. E. Dodge, and Theodore Bailey Johnson had been appointed commissioners by the President to visit regiments of volunteer soldiers in New York State.

Diary of Theodore Roosevelt from January 1 to September 14, 1869

Description:

Ten-year-old Theodore Roosevelt records his trip to Europe with his family. He records the names of hotels and towns where they stayed, people to whom he sent letters, everyday activities, how his money was spent, the names of friends he made in Europe, and lists of Dutch and German words he learned. Samples of plants and flowers he saw were pressed into the pages.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Edith Kermit Carow

Description:

Theodore Roosevelt was interested in the story of the burglar and the Roosevelt family agrees that Edith Kermit Carow's mother has more courage then any other lady. Roosevelt visited Richmond and then went to Hastings, which is on the coast, with his father after his asthma acted up. In Hastings they saw a castle, visited a waterfall, purchased some strawberries, and played croquet.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Dora Watkins and Thomas Watkins

Description:

The Roosevelts spent Christmas in Rome and there were many presents. They ascended Mount Vesuvius and Roosevelt stuck an alpine stick into a small crater which caught the stick on fire. The route down from Vesuvius was very rough.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Edith Kermit Carow

Description:

Theodore Roosevelt had an asthma attack but has recovered. He explored a cave in the Albano area and has been playing soldiers with some Roman friends. Of the Roman sites, Roosevelt has seen the Colosseum and tombs along the Latin way. The Roosevelts are looking forward to returning home and leave for New York on May 15.

Tranquility, a summer home

Description:

This view of the Roosevelt family's summer house, "Tranquility," is taken from the front lawn.  Corinne Roosevelt and Edith Carow are shown on chairs on the front lawn, Martha and Theodore Roosevelt, Sr., on the front porch. "Tranquility," which remained in the Roosevelt family until 1940, was the summer house used most often by Theodore Roosevelt's father.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Edith Kermit Carow

Description:

Since Corinne Roosevelt had been writing so much, Theodore Roosevelt had not previously written to Edith Kermit Carow. Roosevelt has been enjoying the trip and killed several hundred birds with a shotgun his father gave him. He particularly enjoyed Egypt and camping in Syria.
