Description:

Tranquility was the summer home that Theodore Roosevelt and his wife Martha Bulloch Roosevelt kept in Oyster Bay, New York. On the verandah, from left to right, are Martha Bulloch Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt. On the lawn, from left to right, are Edith Kermit Carow and Corinne Roosevelt.

Tranquility, a summer home

Description:

This view of the Roosevelt family's summer house, "Tranquility," is taken from the front lawn.  Corinne Roosevelt and Edith Carow are shown on chairs on the front lawn, Martha and Theodore Roosevelt, Sr., on the front porch. "Tranquility," which remained in the Roosevelt family until 1940, was the summer house used most often by Theodore Roosevelt's father.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Anna Roosevelt Cowles

Description:

Theodore Roosevelt has arrived safely in Lenox, Massachusetts. He ate eight sandwiches and twenty-four peaches while traveling. Uncle Hill picked them up and is glad to have "somebody to talk and swim with." Martha Bulloch Roosevelt is homesick but made friends with a Shaker named Sister Belle. Roosevelt sends his love and gives instructions on how to care for his various pets.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Anna Bulloch Gracie

Description:

Theodore Roosevelt writes Anna Bulloch Gracie about his family's trip to the Levant. The Roosevelts have been traveling on the Nile River for a month, and Theodore Roosevelt is having a great time. He has been shooting and exploring ruins. Roosevelt particularly enjoyed Karnak, which they saw by moonlight. He has added one to two hundred skins to his collection. All the sporting has been "injurious" to his trousers. Typed copy of original handwritten letter.

Theodore Roosevelt suffered an asthma attack but has recovered and is in "perfect health and spirits." He has recently taken a walk in the country, visited a beer garden, attended an open air concert, and shot air rifles. When not studying, Roosevelt has been spending his time translating natural history, wrestling, and cooking.

Theodore Roosevelt asks if his father has received the letter he wrote in German. Everyone is happy that Corinne Roosevelt has arrived in Dresden. Roosevelt confronted an acquaintance who swore too much but he has made a new friend named Edward Jacobs. They spent yesterday boxing and swimming. He received a letter from Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt and Anna Roosevelt who are doing well in Carlsbad.
